　§45　article/ essay/ composition
　　Ⅰ. article “文章、論文”通常指記敘文或論文。如：
　　①The article explains how the machine works. 這篇文章說明了這部機(jī)器怎樣開動的道理。
　　②There is an article on education in the paper. 報紙上有一篇論教育的文章。
　　Ⅱ. essay “文章、論文”通常指文學(xué)上散文、隨筆、雜文等；也指學(xué)術(shù)性論文。如：
　　①We shall read Lu Xun’s essays . 我們將讀魯迅的雜文。
　　②Can you write an essay in English? 你能用英文寫一篇論文嗎？
　　Ⅲ. composition “寫作、作文”。 尤指學(xué)習(xí)語文者為練習(xí)寫作而做的作文。如：
　　①He is learning composition. 他在學(xué)習(xí)寫作。
　　②The students were required to write a composition in English. 要學(xué)生寫一篇英語作文。
　　§46　as soon as/ as early as/ as quickly as
　　Ⅰ. 這三個詞都有“盡快、盡早”之意。
　　Ⅱ. as soon as 側(cè)重于“極短時間內(nèi)”。還表示“一……就……”之意，引導(dǎo)狀語從句。如：
　　①I’ll return it as soon as I can.我將盡快地把它還給你。
　　Ⅲ. as early as 側(cè)重于一天中的早晨或在限定的時間內(nèi)再早點，以便能達(dá)到預(yù)期的目的。如：
　　①You should arrive there as early as you can. 你應(yīng)盡早到達(dá)那里。
　　Ⅳ. as quickly as 表做某事的速度非常之快或動作非常之敏捷。如：
　　①Please read the text as quickly as you can.請把課文盡快讀一遍。
　　§47　as soon as/ hardly…when/ no sooner…than
　　Ⅰ. 三者在意義上基本相同，都有“一……就……”，“剛……就……”，但它們各有其特點。
　　Ⅱ. as soon as 最為普通，位置靈活，可在主句前，也可在其后。且可用作多種時態(tài)。如：
　　①As soon as I went in , Kate let out a cry of surprise. 我一進(jìn)去，凱特就驚訝地叫了一聲。
　　②I’ll tell him as soon as he comes back.
　　Ⅲ. hardly… when…的主句通常 用過去完成時，從句用一般過去時，when有時還可換成before.如：
　　①He had hardly finished his homework when the light went out. 他剛寫完作業(yè)燈就滅了。
　　②Hardly had I come back when they began quarrelling.我一回來他們就開始吵了起來。（hardly 提前時，句子需要倒裝。）
　　Ⅳ. no sooner…than…句型中， no sooner一般只置于句首，所以主句有倒裝形式。如：
　　No sooner had I known the news than I telephoned my mother. 我剛知道這個消息就打電話告訴了媽媽。
　　§48　as well as/ as well
　　Ⅰ. as well as “也”“不僅…而且”意同：not only … but also具有連詞性。
　　①She is my friend as well as my doctor. 他不僅是我的醫(yī)生，也是我的朋友。
　　②Small towns as well as big cities are being industrialized. 小城市與大城市一樣都在迅速實現(xiàn)工業(yè)化。
　　Ⅱ. as well “也”具有副詞性。大致相當(dāng)于also 或 too . 如：
　　He can speak Chinese as well.
　　§49　as/ because/ for/ since
　　Ⅰ. 這三個詞都可以用作連詞，表“原因、理由” 但有區(qū)別：
　　Ⅱ. as “因為、既然”表示的原因或理由是明顯的。語意不如because強(qiáng)。當(dāng)理由是明顯的，或者被認(rèn)為是已知的時，則以用as 為好。如：
　　①As he was not well, I decided to go without him. 因為他身體不好，我決定獨自去了。
　　②As it was getting very late, we soon turned back. 因為已很晚了， 我們很快就回來了。
　　③As it is raining, you’d better take a taxi. 既然在下雨，你最好乘出租車。
　　Ⅲ. because “因為”表直接而明確的原因或理由。即必然的困果關(guān)系。在這幾個詞中，它的語意最強(qiáng)。回答以why 引導(dǎo)的特殊疑問句時，只能用because . 注意：because 不可以與so 連用。如：
　　①He had to stay at home yesterday because he was ill.昨天他只得呆在家里，因為他病了。
　　②I did it because they asked me to do it. 我之所以做這件事，是因為他請我做的。
　　③---Ｗhy can’t you do it now? --- Because I’m too busy.
　　Ⅳ. since“既然”比as 較為正式，說明為人所知的原因。語氣比because 稍弱。
　　①Since light travels faster than sound, we see lightening before we hear the thunder.因為光比聲音傳播得快，所以我們先看到閃電，后聽到雷聲。
　　②Since he can’t answer the question, you’d better ask someone.既然他回答不了這個問題，你最好問別人吧。
　　③Since you are busy, I’ll do it for you.既然你忙，我替你做吧。
　　Ⅴ. for “因為”表原因或理由時，用以說明理由，只是解釋性的。在這幾個詞中，它的語意最弱。它少用于口語中，也不用于句首。如：
　　①I asked her to stay to tea, for I had something to tell her. 我請她留下來喝茶，因為我有事要告訴她。
　　②We must get rid of carelessness, for it often leads to errors. 我們一定克服粗枝大葉的毛病，因為粗枝大葉常常差錯。
　　③It must have rained, for the road is wet. 一定下雨了，因為路是濕的。
　　④I must go now, for my sister is waiting for me.現(xiàn)在我得走了，我姐姐在等我呢。
　　［注］：這幾個詞按語意的強(qiáng)弱來排，其順序為：
　　because—→since—→(as)—→for
　　§50　as/ when/ while
　　這三個詞都可以用作連詞，表時間關(guān)系，　但有區(qū)別：
　　Ⅰ. as “當(dāng)（在）……時候”往往可與when 或　while　通用，但它著重指主句和從句的動作或事情相并發(fā)生。如：
　　①I saw him as he was getting off the bus. 當(dāng)下公共汽車的時候，我看見了他。
　　②As he walked on, he felt himself getting more and more tired.他繼續(xù)往前走的時候，感到越來越疲乏。
　　Ⅱ. when “當(dāng)（在）……的時候”主句和從句的動作或事情可以同時發(fā)生，也可以先后發(fā)生。
　　①It was raining when we arrived. 當(dāng)我們到達(dá)的時候，正下著雨。
　　②Ｗhen we were at school, we went to the library every day.我們在求學(xué)的時候，每天都到圖書館去。
　　Ⅲ. while “當(dāng)（在）……的時候”表主句的動作或事情發(fā)生在從句中的動作或事情的進(jìn)展過程之中。從句通常為進(jìn)行時態(tài)。它有時可與when通用，但它只能指一段時間（a period of time）,而不能指一點時間（a point of time）如上面的第一個例子。又如：
　　①Please don’t talk so loud while others are working. 別人在工作的時候，請勿大聲講話。
　　②While I am washing the floor, you can be cleaning the windows.我洗地板時，你可以擦窗戶。
　　§51　ask / inquire/ question
　　Ⅰ. ask “問、詢問”是最普通的用語，通常表示只是為了獲得回答或了解某事而提問。如：
　　①I asked him if he could come. 我問他能不能來。
　　②I’ll ask him how to get there. 我要問他怎樣去那兒。
　　Ⅱ. inquire “問、詢問”表查究，調(diào)查的意思。如：
　　①I have inquired of him whether he could help me.我已問過他是否能幫助我。
　　②She came to inquire about her friend’s health.她來詢問她朋友的健康情況。
　　③He inquired of me about our work.他向我了解了我們的工作情況。
　　Ⅲ. question “詢問、審問、提問”含有提出一連串問題的意味。如：
　　①I questioned him about the matter.我問過他這件事。
　　②He was questioned by the police.　他受到警察的審問。
