　Ⅱ.reply “回答、答復”。 但比answer 正式些。它指用口頭或書面回答。嚴格地講，是指有針對性地詳細地回答。 它也指用行動回答。 Reply 常用作不及物動詞，回答某人或某事。后接to; 當它與直接引語或從句連用時，才用作及物動詞。如：
　　①I didn’t reply to him.我沒有答復他。
　　② He replied that he might go. 他回答說他可能去。
　　§38　any/ either
　　二者所指的相關名詞或代詞的數量不同。
　　Ⅰ. any 指二個以上的“任意一個”人/物。如：
　　When can you go with me to the city?  Any day of this week will do. 什么時候你能陪我去城里？ 這個星期的哪天都行。
　　Ⅱ. either 一般指兩個中的“任意一個”且其后不能接不可數名詞。如：
　　Can you come on Friday or Saturday?  Either will do .你能在星期五還是星期六來嗎？ 哪天都行。
　　§39　any/ some
　　Ⅰ.any “一些、一點、（有時不宜譯出）” 一般用于疑問句、否定句。  如：
　　①Have you any new books? 你有（什么）新書嗎？No, I have not any new books. 我沒什么新書。
　　②Have you any money with you? 你身邊帶了一些錢嗎？
　　Ⅱ.some “一些、一點” 一般用于肯定句。如：
　　①I have some new books.  我有一些新書。
　　[注]：① any用于肯定句中時，表“任何……、隨便……”等意思。 如You may come at any time. 你隨便什么時候來都可以。
　　②some 用于疑問句時，表“期望得到肯定的回答”或“邀請”或“請求”等意思。通常用在帶情態動詞的問句是。如：
　　1.Aren’t there some envelops in that drawer?那個抽屜不是有些信封嗎？
　　2.Would you have some tea?您喝點茶嗎？
　　§40　anyone/ any one
　　Ⅰ. anyone “任何人”其后不跟of 短語。如：
　　Is there anyone at home.?
　　Ⅱ. any one “任何人/物”其后可跟 of 短語。如：
　　I’ll send you any one of these pens.
　　[注]：類似的用法還有：everyone  &  every one.
　　§41　arise/ rise
　　Ⅰ. rise “升起、起來”它表“起床”的意義時比get up 正式 ，但不如get up 常用。如：
　　①The sun rises in the east. 太陽從東方升起。
　　②The Chinese people have risen to their feet. 中國人民站起來了。
　　③He rises very early. 他起床很早。
　　Ⅱ. arise “出現、發生”。它雖然可表“升起、起來、起床等意思，但現在一般不用于此義，特別是在口語中。如：
　　①A new problem has arisen. 出現了一個新的問題。
　　②How did the quarrel arise? 爭吵是怎樣發生的？
　　§42　arms/ weapon
　　Ⅰ. arms (pl) “武器”著重指用于戰爭的具體的武器，如槍、炮等。 如：
　　①The black people there have taken up arms to defend themselves. 那里的黑人已拿起武器自衛。
　　②The soldiers had plenty of arms and ammunition!士兵們有充足的武器和彈藥。
　　③Lay down your arms! 放下（你們的）武器！
　　Ⅰ. weapon “武器”單、復數形式都用。它意義比arms 廣泛，除指用于戰爭的各種武器之外，還指雖然不是為戰爭而制造，但可以用作進攻或防守的器具。如：槌、石子等。此外，weapon 還可以用于借喻。如：
　　①The atom bomb is a weapon of mass slaughter. 原子彈是一種大規模屠殺的武器。
　　②Look to your weapons. 當心你的武器。
　　③A foreign language is a weapon in the struggle of life. 外國語是人生斗爭的一種武器。
　　§43　around/ round
　　Ⅰ. around 與 round 都可以用著前置詞和副詞。
　　Ⅱ. around “在……周圍”“在周圍”“循環地”。表靜止的位置。如：
　　①They sat around the table. 他們圍繞桌子坐著。
　　②I found nobody around.我發現周圍沒有一個人。
　　Ⅲ. round “環繞……周圍、循環地”表一種活動的狀況。如：
　　①The earth moves round the sun.地球繞著太陽轉。
　　②A wheel goes round. 輪子旋轉著。
　　[注]：這兩個詞現在可以通用，只是around 多用于美國，round多用于英國。
44　arrive/ reach/ get to
　　Ⅰ. arrive, reach, get to 均有“到達”之意，意義基本相同，但arrive(in)/(at) 與reach, 是正式用語，get to 是通俗用詞，常用于口語。
　　Ⅱ. arrive 是不及物動詞，表到達什么地點時，后面應接前置詞in或at, 一般說，到達一個大地方常用in, 到達較小的地方常用at, 但這不絕對的。（與地點副詞連用時當然不用任何前置詞）如：
　　①He arrived in Beijing yesterday.
　　②When he arrived at the stop, the bus had left.
　　Ⅲ. reach 是及物動詞，后面直接跟表地點的名詞。如：
　　When does the train reach London?
　　Ⅳ. get to 只是較口語化。接地點副詞時不用to. 如：
　　①He got to  the shop at 5:00 o’clock this afternoon.
　　②When I got there, the film had been on for 5 minutes.
