　§59　at the top of/ on the top of
　　Ⅰ. at the top of “在……頂點(diǎn)上、在……上”。At 表示點(diǎn)，在句子中用作狀語，反義短語常為 at the bottom of “在……底部”；
　　on (the) top of 中的on 表示部位上的接觸，意思是“在……之上、在……上面”。反義短語常為at the foot of “在……腳底下”。如：
　　①He shouted at the top of his voice. 他高聲地叫喊。
　　②He is at the top of the class.他居全班之首位。
　　③Will you please put this box on (the) top of the books.請你這個(gè)盒子放在那些書的上面好嗎？
60　at/ beside/ by/ near
　　Ⅰ. at “靠近”往往動作聯(lián)系，意味著有目的、有意識的靠近，而by, beside, near只意味著就“靠近”而言。如：
　　①He sat at the desk. He wanted to read, 他坐到桌邊，想看書。
　　Ⅱ. beside “在……旁邊”；by = just at the side of “就在旁邊”。兩者一般可通用。但by 比beside語勢較強(qiáng)些，并多用于日常用語中。如：
　　①There is a hospital beside / by the river. 河邊有一家醫(yī)院。
　　[注]：指“在某人身邊”時(shí)，常多用beside. Eg:
　　① The little boy is standing beside his mother.
　　Ⅲ. near “在……附近”或“離……不遠(yuǎn)”，它表示的距離要比by / beside 來得遠(yuǎn)些。如：
　　①We live near the sea.我們住在海邊。（表離海邊有些距離）
　　②We live by / beside the sea.我們就住在海邊。（表海就在身邊）。
　　§61　at/ in
　　Ⅰ. at 和 in 都可用在地點(diǎn)名詞前，用at 時(shí)是把該地方視為一點(diǎn)，用in時(shí)則是把該地方看成一個(gè)范圍。如：
　　①Are your classmates playing in the park? 你的同學(xué)都在公園里玩嗎？
　　②They are waiting for you at the park. 他們在公園附近（里面）等你。
　　Ⅱ. at; in & on 都可用在表時(shí)間的名詞前。在點(diǎn)時(shí)間前用at; 在表某一天或某一天的某個(gè)段時(shí)間（morning, evening, day, night atc）名詞前，用on; 在段時(shí)間名詞前（星期；年；月；周等）用in. 如：
　　①I’ll meet you at eight. 我們8：00 鐘會面。
　　②See you on Monday morning. 星期一早上見。
　　③The story happened in May.故事發(fā)生在5月份。
　　Ⅲ. 固定詞組：如：in the morning ; at night.
　　§62　at/ to
　　Ⅰ. at多表目的或目標(biāo)，而to 則僅表方向。如：
　　①He threw the ball at me. 他對準(zhǔn)我扔球。
　　②He threw the ball to me. 他朝著我這個(gè)方向扔球。
　　③My father shouted at me.我父親對我吼叫。
　　④My father shouted to me. 我父親朝著我喊叫。
　　§63　a year and a half / one and a half years
　　這是英語中表示“多少半”的兩種說法：
　　如：
　　①an hour and a half = one and a half hours. 一個(gè)半小時(shí)
　　②two kilos and a half = two and a half kilos 兩公斤半。
　　§64　awake/ wake/ waken
　　Ⅰ. awake “弄醒、叫醒、喚醒、醒來”與wake同意。引申意義為“覺醒、清醒”時(shí)，與awaken 同意。
　　①The noise awoke me. 喧鬧聲吵醒了我。
　　②But before long, the camel woke him.不久，駱駝就把他弄醒了。
　　③I usually awake (wake) at six. 我通常六點(diǎn)鐘醒來。
　　Ⅱ. wake 后往往跟up, awake 則不能； 而awake可作形容詞，意為“醒著的”。 如：
　　①Has he waked (up) yet? 他醒來了沒有？
　　②Is he awake or asleep? 他醒著還是睡著？
　　Ⅲ. waken / awaken. 一般多用在被動語態(tài)中，意為“被叫醒、被弄醒”。如：
　　①I was awakened by the cry of the baby. 我被小孩的哭聲驚醒了。
　　§65　bank/ shore/ beach/ coast
　　Ⅰ. bank “岸”， 大都指河岸。如：
　　The twon is on the bank of the river. 那個(gè)城鎮(zhèn)在河岸上。
　　Ⅱ. shore “岸”，指海，湖， 大河等的岸，常含有與水相對的意味。如：
　　The ship stopped a little way off the shore. 這船停在離岸不遠(yuǎn)的地方。
　　Ⅲ. beach“海灘、湖灘”, 通常指漲潮時(shí)有水，退潮時(shí)無水的有沙子或卵石的海灘或湖灘。如：
　　The children are playing on the beach.孩子們在海灘上玩。
　　Ⅳ. coast “海岸”僅指沿海之岸，尤指為水域邊界。如：
　　①There are many harbours on the east coast of our land. 我國的東海岸上有許多港口。
