Between 2004 and 2008, older ice cover reduced 595,000 square miles nearly the size of Alaska’s land area.
Older ice is more important in the Arctic because it is thicker and can last from winter to summer. Without ice cover, the Arctic Sea’s dark waters absorb the sun’s heat more easily instead of reflecting it as the ice does. Researchers had known for years that ice covering in the Arctic Sea had been reducing in area, but the new study showed that the volume of sea ice was reducing as well.
Data from the study will help scientists understand how fast the volume of Arctic ice is reducing and how soon the region might be “nearly ice-free” in summer.
